Many golfers braved atrocious weather conditions the past Sunday to take part in the 17th annual golf day of Young Gardens Rugby Football Club at Boschenmeer.
Despite the weather, including a punishing hailstorm, the players thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
In the end the partnership of Elton Jones and Henry Swartz walked away with the first prize, a four-ball with carts at the prestigious Pearl Valley golf course. They scored 48 Betterball Stableford points.
Hein Abrahams and Eddie Goliath’s 48 points on a count out earned them a fourball at Paarl Golf Club. Third place went to Julian Brand and Matthew Speelman on 47 points. They won a four-ball at Bellville Golf Club.
Ivor van Schoor, president of Young Gardens, extended his heartfelt gratitude to all sponsors and players for their contribution to the golf day. “Your generosity and kindness allow us to keep on providing an avenue for young men to channel their energy in a positive way and to escape the clutches of unscrupulous gangsters.
“Most of our players come from underprivileged areas, and many of them are jobless so we need to have regular fundraising events to keep the club healthy financially. Rugby is a contact sport and injuries are part and parcel of our sport, so our medical bills are our biggest expense. The funds raised today will go a long way in helping us covering those expenses. Therefore we are grateful to everyone who supported our golf day.”
Van Schoor thanked all sponsors whose contributions were key to the success of the day.
