A crowd of onlookers surrounded the scene where a woman’s body was found in a trench just outside Mbekweni on Monday afternoon. Mbekweni police spokesperson WO Nceba Vanqa said a patrolling police officer was informed of the woman’s remains. “The body was found under the bridge in Jan van Riebeeck Road. On the officer’s arrival he found she was lying face-down and that the lower part of her body was naked.” The officer saw no signs of life and shortly afterwards called role-players to the scene. The body was taken to the state mortuary for a post-mortem. Vanqa said the post-mortem results, which were still pending, would determine whether the dead woman had been raped. “The body has not yet been identified,” he said. “We appeal to anyone with information to report it to Mbekweni Police Station, especially if they know about someone who is missing.” Photo: Heleen Rossouw
