Forget about the interschools duels, forget politics or status, put differences aside and even Springbok supporters can spend a night with their All Black rivals. That is the aim of Wellington Unite project with their Long Table Event.
The Wellington Unite project is organised by a group of volunteers who strive towards an inclusive sense of community.
The idea of the Long Table is to have 1 000 people from all walks of life in and around Wellington to sit around 100 tables and to come together for a three course meal, during which the town and the people of Wellington are celebrated.
Clifford Asia from the NGK-Bovlei and -Van Wyksvlei, says: “The Wellington Unite project is much bigger than just an organisation. It creates the opportunity for as many people as possible to come together.”
The project is rapidly gaining momentum, with dozens of schools, community organisations, businesses, as well as the Drakenstein Municipality and local tourism pledging their support.
The Wellington Unite project is set to take place on Wednesday 4 December at 18:00, under the candle light in Church Street, with tickets available at only R20. Businesses and institutions are welcome to sponsor tables to help cover the costs for the event.
Security plans have been put in place, with no alcoholic drinks allowed and restricted access and parking is arranged. Victoria Park will be closed, but alternative routes will be available, which will be advertised later.
Anyone who wants to become involved in the project can send an email to kurkprop.promosies@gmail.com or visit www.wellingtonaantafel.co.za or visit the Facebook Page: Wellington Aan Tafel-Wellington Unite, for more information.
