Foundation-phase learners can now enjoy more than 50 books in the Western Cape Education Department’s (WCED) recently launched virtual library.
The department has made improving early reading a strategic goal for the province, and launched the Western Cape Reading Strategy in March this year.
During the same launch, Team Read was also introduced on the understanding that everyone has a part to play in a child’s development, whether through reading to them or instructing them.
However, as result of the Covid-19 pandemic many of the planned programmes were put on hold.
MEC for Education Debbie Schäfer says books are available in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa.
“For each grade there are 66 books available,” she said. “One can access the library through our e-portal.”
