Paarl resident Derick Coetzee is no stranger to pushing limits. This December he’ll face his toughest challenge yet: running 200 miles (321,8 km) through the rugged terrain of the Longmore Forest near Gqeberha.
Starting on 18 December, Coetzee will tackle the Longmore Forest Endurance Run, a gruelling race with a 90-hour time limit that tests runners with physical pain, sleep deprivation and emotional fatigue. But for him this journey is about far more than just crossing the finish line; it’s about changing lives.
Coetzee is a mentor with The Character Company, an NGO that provides mentorship to boys growing up without fathers. Drawing from his own childhood in a loving, two-parent home, he is deeply aware of the challenges fatherless boys face.
“The absence of a father figure can leave boys without guidance during critical stages of their development. I’ve seen how mentorship fills that gap, giving these boys the support and encouragement they need to grow.”
This December Coetzee is combining his passion for ultra-running with his commitment to mentorship. He’s raising funds to take the boys he mentors on weekend camps, giving them opportunities to connect with nature, build meaningful relationships, and develop the character traits they need to thrive.
“The camps are a chance for these boys to experience the beauty of the outdoors and spend time with mentors who genuinely care about their future. It’s not just about fun—it’s about building resilience, confidence, and joy.”
Coetzee called on his local community in Paarl and beyond to join him in making a difference. “We may not all be able to run 200 miles, but we can all take steps to change a boy’s life. Every contribution brings us closer to creating life-changing experiences for these young men.”
Coetzee’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and community. His determination to help others mirrors the grit and heart it takes to tackle an extreme race. Together, we can support Coetzee’s mission and help build a brighter future for these boys.
