Two primary school musicians, percussionist Kyrah Adams (12) of Paarl and Pianist Madison le Roux (12) of Franschhoek have been chosen to perform at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre’s yearly Concerto Festival which will take place on 24 August. Only ten learners from all over the country get chosen to perform at this event.

Kyrah, a student at the Frank Pietersen Music Centre, will play a movement of a Vivaldi concerto on the xylophone with the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre’s Orchestra.

Kyrah, started off her music journey at the age of 7. She has been awarded the overall Junior category winner prize for the percussion section at the Paarl Valley Eisteddfod from 2016 to 2019. Kyrah also plays the violin, and she participates actively in the Frank Pietersen Music Centre’s Percussion and String Ensembles, as well as the Intermediate and Senior Orchestras.

She was the winner of the Best Overall Junior Trophy at the music centre awards in 2017 and she has been awarded the music centre’s Principal’s award (the highest achievement for a music centre learner) in 2018.

She will play a Violin Concerto with the Centre’s Youth Orchestra at the Annual Prestige Concert on 13 August 2019.

Kyrah is a Grade 7 learner at William Lloyd Primary school where she is a prefect. She plays hockey and is academically top in her class.

Madison le Roux, 12), a piano student of Dr Mario Nell, head of music at the Conservatory of Music at University of Stellenbosch, will be performing a movement of a Haydn Piano Concerto at the Hugo Lambrechts Concerto Festival. Madison will also be performing the same Concerto with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra at the Western Cape Youth Music Festival at Artscape on 31 August.

Madison, a Gr 6 learner at Bridge House School, has taken piano lessons with Dr Nell since she was 8 years old and has taken part in many Eisteddfods and has won several awards and prizes. She has passed all her external piano examinations with distinction.

Madison has been taking part in the Samro Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition for Primary School learners for some years and in 2017 was awarded the runner-up prize for “The most promising candidate ten years and younger”. In 2018 she was semi-finalist at the same competition. Last year she was also the overall winner of the primary school category at the National Grahamstown Music Competition. In April 2019, she was selected to perform in the Klassieke Jeug music production at the Suidoosterfees.

Madison is also a student at Frank Pietersen Music Centre, taking cello lessons with Hester Fischer and playing in the orchestra.

She enjoys playing chamber music and is a regular participant at the annual Franschhoek Chamber Music Workshop where she performs on her two instruments, piano and cello.

She also regularly performs in school assemblies, school concerts and community concerts.
