Charleston Hill Secondary lost two learners in less than two weeks.

Grade 12-learner Keanan van Schoor died on 24 January after being involved in an accident.

Less than two weeks later a Grade 10-learner from the same school passed away after he apparently took his own life.

Capt Basil Seekoei, Paarl East police spokesperson, says the detectives are investigating an inquest case. “It is believed that the deceased was found by his parents. No foul play is suspected.”

In another tragic event concerning a young learner, just days before the new school year started, a 15-year-old learner of Noorder-Paarl High School apparently committed suicide.

WO Nceba Vanqa, spokesperson for the Mbekweni police, confirmed the incident that took place on 17 January at approximately 15:30.

“According to her siblings she went to the garage,” he related. “Later on, when they realised she had not come back, they went to investigate, but there was no response.

“The garage door was locked [and] they went inside to get the remote of the main garage door.”

The siblings came across their sister’s lifeless body after successfully opening the main garage door.

According to Vanqa, an ambulance and the police were called to the scene. She was unfortunately declared dead on the scene.

“The deceased did not leave any note. Mbekweni police are investigating an inquest case.”. Anyone in need of mental health support can contact the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) on 080 012 1314 or;. Adcock Ingram Depression and Anxiety helpline on 080 070 8090.
