Crime is rampant in Mbekweni, and taxi violence may be expected to flair up again after a prominent figure and boss of the taxi association Codeta, Siyabulela Mandyoli (52), was shot dead on Tuesday afternoon.
The shooting, confirmed by Mbekweni police spokesperson WO Nceba Vanqa, occurred around 16:30 in front of the deceased’s house at A Block, Phokeng Street.
“Mbekweni police attended a shooting incident at the said address and found the deceased lying on the ground between the house and a trailer.
“He had multiple gunshot wounds on his body.”
He died on the scene, the spokesperson confirmed.
According to a death notice shared by local ANC members Mandyoli was referred to as a “beloved comrade” and ANC member of Ward 12. He is said to have served as both the deputy chairperson and chairperson of the Bulelani Mangena branch.
He was also a Sanco and Codeta chairperson, the notice said.
This incident was soon followed by the swift arrest of four males aged 23, 29 and two aged 37 years.
Vanqa added that these suspects were still in police custody and were expected to appear in the Paarl Magistrates’ Court soon.
