Sunfield Home in Wellington needs more than R2 million to build a centre for intellectual disabled adults on the Autism Spectrum Disorder.
In the past Sunfield Home did not specifically cater for intellectual disabled adults on the Autism Spectrum Disorder, but throughout the years Autism Spectrum Disorder was diagnosed in existing Sunfield residents and had to be accommodated within Sunfield, even though they needed more specialised care.
According to Elmarie van Schalkwyk, managing these clients with their specific needs within the Sunfield community, was quite challenging, because they realised that these clients are not always capable to function in a combined community like Sunfield and usually resulted in behavioural problems and conflict.
“Identifying these problems and due to the constant demand from the broader community for residential care for intellectually disabled adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sunfield Home Wellington therefor decided to change strategy and gear up for a separate residential care facility for these clients and a protective workshop for current and future customers,” Van Schalkwyk said.
According to her this will be the first of its kind in the Western Cape. With the new care centre they will be able to provide a 24 hour residential care facility accommodating 17 clients. They will also be able to create employment by providing a protective workshop to cater to the specific needs of their clients.
Sunfield Home is currently busy raising funds to make this centre a reality.
On Saturday 15 October Jakkie Louw will perform at Zanddrift Vineyards from 12:30 and tickets cost R50 per person.
