Could it perhaps be that what happens on our roads is just an extension of our intolerance and lack of respect for our fellow citizens? This lack of courtesy and aggressive behaviour could be symptomatic of our broken and violent society?
With shock I have witnessed some irresponsible and dangerous driving on Drakenstein roads. Some of the taxi drivers who have no regard for other road users, who stop and park when and where they want to. The heavy public buses transporting commuters just stopping anywhere without warning or any indication. The tremendous speeding of some road users on the boulevard and other drag strips.
Hopefully those who break the law should be fined and brought to book. It should be the main focus of law enforcement to treat nobody with favour who has broken traffic laws.
My main concern is that road thugs think they are above the law and will/cannot be apprehended.
My appeal to all road users this “Festive Season” is to practise ubuntu on our roads.
You are because I am. An injury to one is an injury to all. It starts with attitudes of tolerance and respect on our roads. Let’s not be party to another accident waiting to happen. Our valley and its beautiful people should be cherished and arrive safely at their destinations. May law enforcement have zero tolerance for drinking and driving, road rage, breaking of laws and intolerance. We owe it to the innocent road users who always obey the law, and would like to have a safe trip and holiday.
