Book now at Quicket for a once-in-a- life-time show at Daisy Jones Bar in Stellenbosch on Sunday 25 September.
Singer-songwriter Dave Cousins of the legendary British band Strawbs is currently in the country with producer and keyboardist Blue Weaver. Weaver is famous for his work with the Bee Gees during their Saturday Night Fever period, Strawbs, Pet Shop Boys and Mott the Hoople.
They will team up with some top-notch South African musicians. These include Schalk Joubert on bass, Kevin Gibson on drums and Mauritz Lotz on guitars and a variety of guest singers and musicians to record some new material at the Academy of Sound Engineering in Cape Town under the guidance of celebrated SA engineer Peter Pearlson.
Strawbs is an English rock band founded in 1964. The band started out as a bluegrass group, but eventually moved on to other styles such as folk rock, and progressive rock.
In the early days Strawbs played with Sandy Denny, later known as the lead singer of Fairport Convention and for her duet with Robert Plant on the timeless Led Zeppelin classic “The Battle of Evermore”.
Strawbs are best known for their hit “Part of the Union”, which reached number two in the UK Singles Chart in February 1973, as well as for “Lay Down”, a popular progressive rock hit from the same LP.
Strawbs toured with Supertramp in their “Crime of the Century” tour, doing their own “Hero and Heroine” tour, which drew musical similarities and themes.
The idea of recording music in South Africa came about after Cousins had some solo shows in SA in early 2020. He was joined by Joubert on bass and they had an exceptional rapport on stage.
Joubert was then invited to contribute some bass parts to the Strawbs album called Settlement, which was produced by Blue Weaver and recorded during lockdown in 2020.
The recordings and live show that takes place on Sunday 25 September at The Daisy Jones in the Winelands will also be filmed as part of a documentary film about the band currently being made by local production company Palama Films.
Tickets are R200pp online or R250 at the door. Doors open at 13:00 and the show starts at 15:00. For bookings go to quicket.co.za.
