On Tuesday I saw updates on social media of what looked like a protest action near an informal settlement in Wellington. As with many service delivery protests in our beloved country, tyres were burned and roads were barricaded. What struck me, however, was the absolute filth that surrounded these protesters.

This was clearly not rubbish that was dumped there as part of the protest.

How on earth can you complain about service delivery and the lack of stable electricity supply, when you have absolutely no appreciation and respect for your immediate environment.

As much as I understand the frustration of these residents, the delivery of proper service starts with respecting your environment.
