An allegedly drunken encounter with two men turned especially vicious when they allegedly unleashed four dogs on private security guards at the Oude Chardonnay Estate in the De Zoete Inval area of Paarl on Friday night, 21 October.

A source from the estate, who wished to remain unnamed, said the two did not reside at the estate.

“On Friday night, before loadshedding at 22:00, our security guard was accosted in the guardroom by two drunken individuals and attacked by their dogs – two pit bulls and two alsatian (German shepherd)-type dogs.

“The incident unfolded after the men were asked not to come onto our property as all their dogs were off-leash.

“The female security guard locked herself in the toilet when the attackers set their dogs on her. When the estate manager arrived on the scene he too was threatened.”

Soon after, a reaction team from Vetus Schola, one of the estate’s contractors, arrived. They were able to follow the perpetrators to their address, followed by the police’s arrival on scene.

Paarl police spokesperson Capt Louise du Plessis confirmed an investigation into an assault incident against a security guard at a residential security complex was underway.

She said the suspects had allegedly become involved in an altercation with the security guard, resulting in the dogs also attacking the guard.

She said the guard received medical treatment and the investigation into the assault was continuing.

The guard had to receive stitches and a tetanus injection following the attack.

According to the source from Oude Chardonnay, there were several aspects of the incident that still bothered him.

“From Friday until now (Monday afternoon) the dogs that attacked the security guards have not been removed, despite Vetus Schola having provided the address to the police.

“The security agency Hunters Group is not prepared to force the issue beyond the care of the guards. I’m personally worried about the security company and its treatment of the guards and whether the guards would be taken care of as they should be as they have indicated concern about the manner in which they are ‘supervised’.”

Attempts to reach the security firm for comment via their phone number and email provided on its website were unsuccessful.

“The investigation is continuing and all the relevant statements will be taken during the investigation process,” Du Plessis said.

“A case of grievous bodily harm (GBH) is being investigated by Paarl police. Once it is complete, the case file will be presented to the senior state prosecutor for further instructions.”
