Despite challenges such as the rest of the world experienced over the past two and a half years, Paarl Scouts is still going strong.
Paarl Scouts, which has been serving the youth of Paarl for more than 100 years already, is part of the volunteer organisation Scouts South Africa.
The Scouts is a worldwide youth movement employing the Scout method, a programme of informal education with an emphasis on practical outdoor activities, including camping, woodcraft, aquatics, hiking, backpacking, and sports.
The aim of Scouts is to add to the development of the youth and inspires patriotism, sound moral values, courage, character-building, self-reliance and community awareness through the Scout programme.
Paarl Scouts are open to children (5-6 and 7-10), teens (11-17), youths (18-30) and adults who want to embrace their adventurous spirit, enjoy challenging activities and make a positive impact on their communities.
Scouting changes lives and helps children and young adults to reach their full potential.
Leadership abilities, teamwork, self-motivation, commitment, perseverance, environmental, cultural awareness and strong values are just a few of the life skills members acquire whilst having fun and ‘learning by doing’.
Positive peer pressure and outdoor activities all contribute to individuals growing up with the belief that they can and are changing the world in order to leave it a better place than how they found it.
Meerkats is for children aged 5 and 6 years starting their Scouting careers; children aged 7 to 10 become Cubs and children aged 11 to 17 years are fully fledged Scouts.
Young adults between the ages of 18 and 30 can join as Rovers.
Each group of children is run by a group of adult volunteers.
Before becoming a member interested children can attend meetings for three weeks and thereafter become a member.
The Paarl Scout Hall is situated at 193 Bonaparte Avenue, Klein Parys, and gatherings take place during the school term each Friday 17:00-19:30
