The Western Cape Education Department released the application outcome of learners who applied for Grade 1 and Grade 8 for the 2024 school year on Monday.
The on-time applications were submitted to the department via the online application process between 13 March and 14 April this year.
“Parents who have been offered a place must confirm their choice of school by 19 June 2023,” said David Maynier, Western Cape MEC for Education. “After this date, their highest-ranked choice of school will be automatically confirmed.”
Maynier explained if a child’s application has been successful at a school to which his/her parents have applied to, a button will be visible that will allow parents to confirm and accept the place.
“We appeal to parents to confirm their places as soon as possible, as this will free-up places for other learners. This is especially important where a learner has received offers from multiple schools. Once these ‘double-parked’ learners are confirmed to a specific school, the places at the other schools can be offered to other learners.”
Parents can view the outcome of the applications online via the profile they have created on the department’s website.
Maynier added parents are required to drop off the hard-copy documents of their applications to their school of choice within seven days of accepting a place.
He said there are instances where learners did not receive an offer from any of the schools they applied to, but he advises parents “not to panic”.
“There will be learners who are not successful in getting placed in this first initial phase. We know this is extremely stressful and disappointing, but we appeal to parents to bear in mind we are still very early in the admissions process, and thousands of places will still open up.
“For example, more than 41 000 learners have been ‘double parked’, allowing more than 41 000 spaces still to become available once their chosen schools are confirmed. It is advisable to stay in touch with the schools applied to and request the learner be placed on a waiting list.”
According to Maynier, if a child is not placed within the next few months the WCED will assist parents with placement towards the end of September.
The online admissions system is now closed for applications, yet parents can still apply for 2024 by completing a learner placement form and submitting this at their education district office, Maynier said.
