Drakenstein Municipality received accolades this week having been rated the number one secondary city for good governance in the Western Cape and the number three secondary city in South Africa.
This according to the Good Governance Africa index, a NPO focused on researching, advocating and improving governance across Africa.
The three main catagories of governance which were taken into consideration were: Administration; Service Delivery; and Planning and Monitoring.
In comparison with many bankrupt and defunct municipalities elsewhere in the country, Drakenstein is light years away.
But yet the area is not the once shiny pearl it used to be. Daily complaints are received about areas were service delivery takes the back seat. Services which rates and tax payers dearly pay for are just not up to scratch anymore.
Pavements and roads in areas are deteriorating, the tending of public spaces such as sidewalks and some parks seldom happens, the general state of Paarl CBD is sad, law enforcement is all but non-existent. The list of complaints goes on.
Drakenstein residents want value for money when it comes to service delivery in their towns and deservedly so. They are not really interested in what other towns look like. It is here that their hard- earned money is spent and they deserve excellence for this.
