As a third-year student on the CPUT campus in Wellington I just want to express my displeasure about the crazy protest action by a handful of students of late.
If you look at the complaints, the issues are by no means substantive and just shows how uninformed these few students are.
But then they go and cause thousands of rands worth of damage to campus property, not to mention their disruption of educational classes.
The issue of accommodation is ludicrous, so too accusations of racism it would seem nowadays if someone has no reason to protest, but have the desire to, they pull out the race card without any substance whatsoever for it.
Just ask, why are so many Bellville students getting accommodation at Wellington campus residences while local students are being sidestepped?
Why do certain students who did not even apply for residence get placed in a Wellington residence just because they have travelled from another province, but local students are ignored?
Why is disciplinary action taken against some students because of petty transgressions, while other students from far away are allowed to do exactly as they please and break as many campus rules as they want, and no action is taken?
And these are the students who continuously pull out the race card with self-righteous abandon and with a hand-out mentality.
Does protest mean a free-for-all stance of harassing, scaring and intimidating students who choose not to protest?
These protesting students of CPUT should rather focus on their studies so they can become educated about the real realities of the world.
