The South African Police Services followed-up on information, which led to the arrest of eight suspects for possession of unlicenced firearms this past Sunday (11 August) in Klapmuts, according to WO Joseph Swartbooi, a spokesperson for the provincial police department.
“Police officers attached to the provincial extortion task team pursued information on a person in possession of a firearm without a valid licence on Sunday (11 August),” he related.
“The members approached the identified dwelling situated in Mandela Park [in] Klapmuts and found a man who fitted the description provided to them.”
“They searched the suspect and found a firearm with ammunition in his possession.”
“The 36-year-old man could not provide a valid [firearm] licence, which resulted in his arrest for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.”
The suspect then led the police to a nearby address where they found another man (39) also in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
He was arrested along with the suspect for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Meanwhile, Cloetesville, Stellenbosch police were on crime-prevention patrol on 11 August, around 17:00, when they responded to information on a firearm stored at an address in Botmaskop Street.
“They went to the house, searched the premises and found a .38 special revolver hidden in a gutter,” Swartbooi said.
The police detained six males for possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
Once charged, the suspects will appear in the Paarl and Stellenbosch magistrates’ courts.
