It was a successful weekend for Paarl’s motorsport enthusiasts as local drivers delivered standout performances at the inaugural Speed Classic Cape Town which took place on Saturday and Sunday (25 to 26 October) on Philip Kgosana Drive.

Paarl driver Dawie Joubert dominated his class in the King of the Mountain event, clocking a time of 37,3 seconds in his Lotus Exige. He finished 3,4 seconds ahead of Marcel Angel in a Ferrari 488 GT3, while Arnold du Plessis completed the podium in a Nissan Black Hawk Patrol with a 52,3-second run.

Joubert also secured third place in the final top 10 King of the Mountain shootout, setting a time of 37,4 seconds. He trailed behind Reghard Roets, who finished second in 35,8 seconds, and overall winner Franco Scribante, who took top honours with 35,2 seconds.

During Classic Car Saturday, he also led his class in a 1995 BMW 328i, posting a 46-second run. He finished ahead of Alex Johnson in a 1993 Audi S4 with 48,3 seconds and Anthony Corin in a 2000 Porsche 996 GT3 Cup with 49,3 seconds.

Guy Davies, a Paarl resident that competes in his specially-modified Porsche 911 to accommodate him as a wheelchair user, also took part in the Speed Classic Cape Town on Sunday.

He did not take his class final, but, however, did set a fastest time of 49,6 seconds in his final qualifying run. His goal was to set a time of under 50 seconds, which he did.

According to Davies the Speed Classic Cape Town, with its inaugural event “was an amazing event, with a wonderful range of competitors”.

Davies is already gearing up for his next race, the Simola Hillclimb in Knysna, which starts on 30 April 2026.

Fellow Paarl competitor Mark Kirk also claimed victory in his class, the King of the Mountain event, driving a 2018 Porsche GTS to a time of 45,4 seconds up the 1,8km Philip Kgosana Drive hill. He edged out Giancarlo Loreti by a mere 0,1 seconds, with Loreti’s BMW M2 taking second place. Artiom Denisov secured third in an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio with a time of 46,1 seconds.

The Speed Classic Cape Town drew over 150 entries across two days of competition, namely Classic Car Saturday and the King of the Mountain showdown on Sunday. The invitation-only event attracted close to 15 000 spectators and more than 180 000 viewers online as drivers battled it out beneath Table Mountain over the weekend.
