A fire that started New Rest, an informal settlement between Mbekweni and Wellington, at approximately 09:00 today (6 February) is still ongoing.
According to Daan van Leeuwen Boomkamp, chair of the Drakenstein Farm Watch (DFW), their fire department received a call at 09:08, where after they informed Drakenstein Municipality’s (DM) fire brigade.
Van Leeuwen Boomkamp said that the DFW is not currently on the scene as the municipal fire fighters have the situation under control.
According to Sabelo Mahlathi, a community activist in Mbekweni six structures have burned down so far.
“The owner of the shack where the fire started left for work this morning, so they might have left a stove or something on,” Mahlathi said.
