The nominations for the 2023 National Teaching Awards (NTAs) have officially opened and the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) urges all teachers in the province to participate.

The NTAs are a chance for everyone to recognise teachers for their outstanding work throughout the year, Education MEC David Maynier explained.

“Previous winners have gone on to achieve amazing things in our department, so we can’t wait to see what this year’s winners will bring to the table! Our Provincial Teaching Awards are scheduled to take place at the end of August this year, and our provincial winners will go on to become our nominees for the National Teaching Awards in October 2023.

“Our teachers excelled at the national awards last year, six of our nominees placing in the top 3 nationally. Four teachers won the national competition, the remaining two placing second in their categories. We are confident that this year’s provincial winners will achieve similar success on the national stage!”

He added all teachers, school governing bodies and district officials are invited to submit nominations to their principals or centre managers. “A circular with the nomination guide and relevant application form has been sent to all schools, and are also available at https://wcedonline.westerncape.gov.za/national-teaching-awards”

There are 14 award categories. They include: Excellence in Grade R Teaching; Excellence in Primary School Teaching (Grades 1–7); Excellence in Primary School Leadership; Excellence in Secondary School Teaching (Grades 8–12); Excellence in Secondary School Leadership; Excellence in Special Needs Teaching; Excellence in Special Needs School Leadership; Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (GET); Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (FET); Excellence in Teaching Natural Sciences; Excellence in Teaching Physical Sciences; Excellence in Technology – Enhanced Teaching and Learning; Best Teacher Award; and Kader Asmal Lifetime Achievement Award.

“We encourage all our teachers to take the opportunity to participate, so we can celebrate teaching excellence in the Western Cape,” Maynier concluded.

Nominations for the NTAs close on 24 July.
