Wellington Golf Club, which was established in 1908, is looking for greener pastures.
This comes in the wake of an increase in crime in the area surrounding the golf course, the deterioration of the neighbourhood in which it is situated and the encroaching rubbish dump.
An alternative course has been earmarked on the other side of the Wellington Valley, and there are also possible future plans to develop a new municipal golf course into the likes of Boschenmeer in Paarl.
A vote on the move is set to be made at the annual general meeting of the club on 8 November, which will in principle set the process in motion.
An insider who didn’t wish to be identified told Paarl Post the current grounds are no longer suitable for the club, but that the value of the property for industrial development is immense.
“On the other hand, if an alternative course is established in the beautiful Bo Vlei Valley, this could be a very valuable tourism boost for Wellington as well as a job creator,” the insider said.
