Next week hundreds of local individuals and businesses will be reaching out to the less fortunate on Mandela Day, 18 July.
On Mandela Day people are called to devote just 67 minutes of their time to change the world for the better, in a small gesture of solidarity with humanity, in homage to the legacy of Nelson Mandela.
Mandela Day each year receives much attention and do-gooders are on that day out in full force feeding and doing their best to help those less fortunate.
But this week has been proof that acts of kindness should not take place only on one day of the year.
The entire valley suffered hardships due to stormy weather this week, which leaving many out in the cold and undernourished. One will hope that many do-gooders have been reaching out to individuals or organisations to assist in whichever way they can.
Right through the year small gestures can be made, such as adopting a granny, feeding the hungry, passing on your unwanted goods to those in need. Give a can of pet food to your local SPCA or even just smile and greet your fellow-man when walking in the street.
The list is endless and these small gestures can surely be done more regularly to make a difference in the lives of the needy around us.
