Menstruation. Something that many women experience, but talking about this very natural process the body undergoes every month can be an uncomfortable conversation to bear for some.

There are many options to pick and choose from to use during one’s monthly flow. There are sanitary pads, tampons and the menstrual cups that are becoming more and more popular.

Menstrual cup, you ask. What is this? It is a small cup made of either silicone, rubber or latex, and shaped like a funnel. The cup collects all the menstruation fluid every day during the menstrual cycle. At the end of each day the cup is used one just flushes it down the toilet.

All one needs to do to maintain the cup is to thoroughly clean it with warm water and soap after each use.

More and more women are choosing these cups, because it is sustainable and it saves them money every month. And one reusable menstrual cup can be used for up to 10 years.

Healthline.com reports that beside the menstrual cups being affordable it is also safer, holds more menstrual fluid than sanitary pads or tampons and it is eco-friendly. There is no need to feel disgusted by menstruation, and Dr Chanell Marthinussen agrees. She is a South African medical doctor and is in favour of menstrual cups. Marthinussen founded the health and wellness website known as The F-word. The F stands for freedom.

“We all have our own ‘F-word’ when it comes to our female hygiene. Your menstrual cycle shouldn’t make you want to say the bad swearing F-word, it should make want to scream the good F-word. Freedom! The F-word is a movement that allows women speak about menstrual periods more freely.”

Martinussen further added: “Females (and males) need to become comfortable speaking about sex and menstruation. As females, by understanding our reproductive system and taking control of our reproductive health, we empower ourselves. Knowledge is power indeed. I believe that a woman’s menstrual cycle should not be a burden because it is part of her daily/monthly/yearly life. By using a menstrual cup, she can be a bloody, free, amazing woman!”
