In an extraordinary turn of events, Farm Sanctuary SA in Franschhoek has revealed a unique prodigy in the world of animal art – a rescued sheep named “Baanksy” which has taken up the paintbrush. Joanne Lefson, Director of Farm Sanctuary SA and founder of the acclaimed Pigcasso art movement, shared the remarkable story.

“Many people asked what would happen if another pig, or any animal, watched Pigcasso paint,” Lefson said. “Would it try to imitate her style? But I knew there could only be one ‘Pigcasso,’ so I never tried. Still, during our painting sessions in 2022, a little lamb would often wander by, watching Pigcasso paint and even posing with her finished artwork!”

The lamb, rescued at just a week old from a roadside in the Karoo, was initially emaciated and fighting for survival. He found comfort in Pigcasso’s barn, where he watched the celebrated pig create her unique abstract artworks. Little did Lefson know that the curious lamb was not just idly observing.

Fast forward to 2024. While this lamb – now a fully-grown ram – was being sheared, a paintbrush was used to clear loose wool from the shears. In a moment that shocked onlookers, Baanksy, as he’s now known, picked up the brush in his mouth and began “painting” on a nearby barn wall. Lefson recalls her astonishment: “No one could believe it! Unbelievably, the sheep had learnt to paint simply by watching Pigcasso when he was a lamb!”

Rather than becoming a typical farm statistic, Baanksy’s story took a creative turn. “Instead of ending up as a leg of lamb or on a live-transport ship, Baanksy is now Pigcasso’s prodigy,” Lefson said. “He’s the ‘Ram-brandt’ that loves to paint! He even ‘signs’ his art with his nose, just like Pigcasso!”

Baanksy’s art has already sparked interest online, with pieces available on Shopify and proceeds directly supporting Farm Sanctuary SA. Lefson reflected on the broader impact of Baanksy’s story: “It’s yet another reminder of the incredible abilities of farm animals – whoever made us think that sheep are unintelligent?”

Supporters can follow Baanksy’s journey and view his creations on Instagram at “BaaBaaBaanksy” and through the official website, www.baanksy.org. Lefson concluded, “Here’s to Pigcasso’s legacy and to her prodigy, Baanksy. May their art inspire a kinder, more sustainable world for all.”

This story of talent, passion, and purpose demonstrates the extraordinary and unexpected abilities of farmed animals, challenging assumptions and inspiring kindness one brush stroke at a time.
