A Zimbabwean man’s life was taken in his yard in Mbekweni this past weekend in full view of his family.
The deceased, Gift Mishoni, was getting ready for work on Saturday morning (26 August) about 07:20. While he was warming up his bakkie in his yard in Sanqoba Street in the Chris Hani area five masked men suddenly appeared.
According to WO Nceba Vanqa, spokesperson for the Mbekweni police, all five men were in possession of firearms.
“When the men entered the yard they pointed the firearms at Mishoni and his family and then stole his car,” he related.
“As the suspects drove off Mishoni ran after them and smashed the window on the passenger side with an iron pole.”
Mishoni then tried to knock the rear window of the bakkie’s hood out when one of the suspects fired a shot at him, striking him in the chest.
The suspects then sped off in his white Isuzu bakkie.
“His family ran to his aid, but he was already dead,” Vanqa said.
“Mishoni was pronounced dead at the scene by ambulance personnel, and police retrieved one used 9 mm round there as well as one live 9 mm round.”
He said the investigation into the incident was still ongoing.
No-one had been arrested yet in connection with the incident at the time of going to press.
Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects is asked to contact Mbekweni police on 021 868 9975.
