Noted arts-and-culture figure and advocate for inclusivity Marlene le Roux has yet another honour to add to her myriad accomplishments.
The Wellington-born CEO of Artscape in Cape Town has been nominated as a jury member for the Music Theatre NOW Competition (MTNOW), an international one, the premier one for first productions of new works professionally staged anywhere in the world. She is one of five internationally acclaimed music-theatre professionals who will select at least six outstanding productions.
The biannual worldwide competition is run by the Music Theatre NOW Network, which aspires to be the premier global network of music-theatre presenters, producers and artists. Through it and the network’s Creators’ Connection Program contemporary music theatre as the most vibrant transdisciplinary art form of present times is promoted. MTNOW has, since 2008, seen more than 2 000 world premieres of operas and musicals enter and take part in a unique convention bringing practitioners and presenters together from across the globe.
Former winners have staged their works at various festivals globally – O Festival (Rotterdam), Prototype Festival (New York) or Shanghai International Contemporary Theatre Festival ACT. MTNOW has been a launch pad for several successful international careers. Winners selected will present works in short lectures at the international convention of Music Theatre NOW at the O Festival in May 2024.
