Last weekend, Matsport Centre in Tshwane became a hub of inspiration and inclusivity as Gymnastics South Africa proudly hosted the fourth edition of the Down Syndrome International Gymnastics (DSIGO) World Championships.
The event welcomed athletes from six nations, including South Africa, Italy, Mexico, Bulgaria, Argentina, and the USA.
The DSIGO Gymnastics World Championships stands out for its commitment to inclusion and empowerment.
Featuring both artistic gymnastics (male and female) and rhythmic gymnastics (female) events, each with varying levels of difficulty and distinct judging criteria, the competition champions the physical excellence and empowerment of individuals with Down Syndrome.
Here, two young gymnasts from Paarl did very well,
Megan le Roux (16) and Coco Surmon (13). Megan is home-schooled while Coco attends Carnegie House in Paarl.
Both from Paarl, they do their gymnastics at Infinity Rhythmic Gymnastics in Paarl.
Megan achieved overall gold and Coco overall bronze, as well as individual gold, silver and bronze medals in the various categories they took part in.
