Checkers Van der Lingen in Paarl may recently have undergone a makeover, but this obviously does not apply to its staff.
Despite being a regular customer at this Checkers, because I live nearby and it is close to my children’s school, I am seriously considering taking my business elsewhere.
Often when I pop in for bread, milk and other essential the isles are blocked by staff who are supposed to be packing shelves, but they are standing idly in groups of two or three chatting about everything but work.
And when one actually does need to find a Checkers worker here for product help or so there is no-one to be seen.
Checkers management can put some effort into providing general training for staff, especially the cashiers, if only to show just an ounce of friendliness.
My other gripe is the motorcycle delivery men of Checkers, who use Van der Lingen Square as a racecourse, swerving through cars, side-stepping the booms and endangering all others.
I really would like to know whether Checkers checks their credentials to see if they have legal driving licences, among other requirements, for it seems most of these drivers are foreigners.
When Checkers opened their doors here more than 10 years ago we were all very excited to have them on our doorsteps.
But this specific store, although covered with a new coat of paint, has become a dismal user experience.
