I often read complaints on various platforms on the lawlessness on the roads of Paarl and surrounds.

And unfortunately I must also add my voice to this.

As a parent who spends much time on the roads running school routes and more I am really shocked to see that the lawlessness on the roads is now out of hand.

For example, on Monday afternoon I was driving in Paarl Main Road from north to south. At both pedestrian crossings near La Rochelle and Girls’ High and at the old-age home the traffic lights were red. But no-one stopped except me.

Then at the three way stop at the intersection with Brug Street, motorists just ignore the fact that there is a stop street in the Main Road and some do not even slow down slightly, they just rush ahead.

Not to speak of cars coming out of side streets and turning in front of you as if they have the right of way.

These are just a few examples of Paarl people’s driving abilities. But the root cause, however, of this is the fact that most of the time there is no sign of traffic police on our roads, only as traffic attendants during schools rush-hour.

With the valley’s population growing by the minute and traffic multiplying on our roads, one would expect that the municipality would strengthen their traffic presence, but obviously not.

I wonder whether the “honourable” Mayor and his cohorts ever take the trouble of driving on our roads to witness for themselves the chaos and multiple traffic transgressions daily and 24/7.
