KWV annual fine wine auction
KWV will again be hosting its ‘white glove’ auction with a selection of 116 unique lots.

Following the record-setting sale of a 1929 KWV Port at its ‘white glove’ inaugural auction last year, KWV returns in 2025 with an equally remarkable showcase: a meticulously curated selection of 116 lots, celebrating a legacy spanning 107 years. Profits from the auction will once again be donated to Nation Builder, in support of non-profit organisations driving long-term change in South African communities.

A showcase of legacy and excellence

The KWV Auction at the Cathedral Cellar presents a collection KWV’s most acclaimed fine wines and limited-release potstill brandies – as well as a rare showcase of the ‘golden era’ of Cape fortified and dessert wines: with vintage KWV Ports from the 1940s, a rare KWV White Port and Red Muscadel from the 1960s, a KWV Hanepoot Jerepigo from the 1970s, and the marquee lot – a 1930 KWV Muscadel.

“Bottles like these are exceedingly scarce, often drawing significant attention at auction due to their age, provenance, and the stories they carry,” says Cape Wine Master Bennie Howard, who curated the auction catalogue. “To offer a wine like the KWV 1930 Muscadel, stored in the very cellar it was crafted in – that kind of provenance is virtually unheard of.”

Vintage verticals, celebratory Pinotage lots & laureate wines

Bidders will also have the opportunity to bid on vertical collections from KWV’s most celebrated wine ranges – including The Mentors, Cathedral Cellar and Roodeberg – alongside special Pinotage lots in honour of the cultivar’s centenary. The latter pay tribute to South Africa’s signature grape and the visionary behind it, Abraham Izak Perold, the professor of viniculture who historically served as KWV’s Chief Wine and Viticultural Advisor.

“The auction showcases only the most premium expressions from KWV’s cellars, selected for their rarity, excellence, and / or historical significance. Some wines were produced in such limited quantities that they were ineligible for competitions with stock volume requirements, while others have already garnered prestigious awards, making them highly sought-after by collectors. Also included are fine wines matured in ideal cellar conditions”, reveals Justin Corrans, KWV’s Chief Winemaker.

Luxury spirits under the hammer

In addition, this year’s auction also presents an exciting opportunity for collectors of fine brandy. With KWV Brandy approaching its centenary in 2026, the 7 May auction offers a compelling glimpse into the producer’s revered aged reserves – from the KWV XO Single Varietal Potstill Brandy, crafted exclusively from Pinotage grapes (just 200 bottles released), to export-only treasures such as the KWV XO Cellar Reserve Brandy, and bespoke collector’s editions. “Together, these lots showcase the calibre of South Africa’s luxury spirits — a portfolio of investment-worthy golden liquid and a proud reflection of KWV’s status as the Most Awarded Brandy Producer in the World,” comments KWV’s Master Distiller, Pieter de Bod.

A rare opportunity for collectors

“This auction presents a rare chance for collectors to acquire fine wines and brandies with a flawless pedigree,” says Higgo Jacobs, senior specialist at Strauss & Co Fine Wine Auctions. “The bottles on sale are sourced directly from KWV’s cellars – their provenance, storage, and traceability are impeccable.”

An auction with impact

“KWV has been a valued partner in our journey (for social change), demonstrating the transformative power of strategic, values-aligned investment,” said Ivan Swartz, CEO of Nation Builder. “Profits from the 2024 auction enabled us to capacitate over 100 registered non-profit organisations across South Africa – enhancing their skills, resources and ability to serve their communities. We are honoured to be part of this meaningful collaboration once again.”

“What’s on offer at the KWV Auction at the Cathedral Cellar is more than just wine or brandy – it’s a testament to the longevity of well-crafted South African wines and spirits. This auction reflects a shared belief: that true impact begins with generosity – and that what’s in the glass can be a powerful force for connection,” adds KWV CEO John Loomes.
