The Western Cape Education Department is running a writing competition for Grade 4 learners. The winning essay will be included in the animated story of Felix and Felicity.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has launched an essay competition for Grade 4 learners.

Primary schools in the province received Story Stars essay competition materials, including story books, learner books and cut-outs for the Grade 4 classrooms.

Story Stars is an animated short film created by using stories that were written and narrated by Grade 4 learners of the Western Cape. Story Stars details the first adventures of Felix and Felicity and can be viewed and/or downloaded at wcedonline.westerncape.gov.za/story-stars.

Grade 4 teachers are encouraged to allow for their learners to read the story booklet which has been provided, watch the animation film and then finish the story, using the delivered learner books. They are to write themselves into the story to complete the adventure and submit their essays to the WCED by 20 March.

The stories will be published in three different languages namely Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa. Prizes will be awarded to the learners and educators of these schools and the winning essay will be animated to complete the adventure. The winning essay will not only be inserted into the story (animation), but the writer will also do a voice-over.

The essay competition is only open to Grade 4 learners of the Western Cape. Entries can be sent to media1.media1@westerncape.gov.za with Story Stars Essay Competition 2020 in the subject line. Visit the above-mentioned website for more information.
