Residents of Harlem Street in Paarl recently caught a suspect red-handed dumping rubbish illegally on an open piece of land.

CCTV footage clearly shows how the driver of a small vehicle drives onto the piece of land and tries to hide behind a tree.

He then dumps a pile of metal strips, a broken table and pieces of glass in the park and then drives off.

And a week later the very same person came back, but this time he was confronted by a resident in Harlem Street.

This matter, together with all the damning photographs and video footage, was then reported to the municipality in the hopes that the perpetrator would at least receive a fine.

Ernest Saayman of Drakenstein Municipality said he would like to thank the community for their attention and action.

“Illegal dumping is unacceptable and does not contribute to the establishment of an aesthetic environment and the preservation of our environment for the next generation, and hence the Municipality’s strict approach of non-tolerance of illegal litterers.”

He said the municipality is already in possession of the details of the vehicle owner in question and will soon contact the owner responsible for the illegal dumping and impose the necessary fine.

“To ensure the successful prosecution of similar matters the municipality is also dependent on the cooperation of the public. Valuable information provided by the public will help us preserve our environment.”
