The screwings-and-doings at the Drakenstein Municipality of late has left the valley under an unpleasant spotlight.
The self proclaimed “City of Excellence” seems to be faltering when it comes to it’s most senior echelon.
First the Mayor was placed under severe suspicion last year when no less than 13 counts of claims of misconduct where brought against him. And then two weeks ago the honourable Mayor was removed from office in a vote of no confidence. It must be added that a number of the ruling party (the DA, who’s colours Poole himself wears) votes were also used to remove Poole.
And so the investigation into the claims against Poole died a very sudden death. But more shocking was the news that followed. The DA chose to reward the disgraced Mayor with a seat in the provincial legislature.
Many questions have arisen since then. Was it to muzzle Poole or was this done to keep Poole within the ranks of the DA and so keeping his supporter’s votes?
Whatever the decision, it is a shame that someone over whom a very dark cloud hangs, is actually promoted higher in the political system.
And to add to the DA and the Drakenstein Municipality’s lack of transparency, the exact charges laid against Poole still remain a “state secret”.
Surely residents have the right to know?
