Drakenstein Municipality’s landfill site in Wellington.

Drakenstein Municipality has opened a public participation process on a proposed bylaw aimed at guiding how solid waste is managed across the municipal area.

Residents are encouraged to study the draft bylaw and submit their comments before the deadline of 30 November 2025.

The municipality said input was vital to ensure the legislation reflected the needs and priorities of local communities.

“When submitting your comments, please consider what should be added to the bylaw, what you support in the current draft and what should be removed or reconsidered,” the municipality said in a statement.

The draft bylaw is available online at http://bit.ly/3IsIVOp and can also be viewed at the Civic Centre in Paarl, the Wellington Municipal Office, Paarl East Engineering Services Office and municipal offices in Gouda and Saron.

Copies are also available at all Drakenstein libraries.

Written submissions may be emailed to wasteby-law@drakenstein.gov.za or delivered to any of the listed offices and libraries. People unable to read or write may provide their comments verbally at the Paarl Library in Market Street, where staff will assist them.

The call for input comes as Executive Mayor Stephen Korabie highlighted the urgency of addressing waste and neglect in communities.

Sharing a photograph during one of his oversight visits, Korabie wrote on Facebook: “The sight of waste and neglect does not reflect who we are as Drakenstein. We are a city of resilience, dignity and possibility. But to live up to that we must act with urgency and unity – residents, leaders, and officials – working side by side to restore pride in our neighbourhoods.”

Residents now have the chance to shape how Drakenstein tackles these challenges for future generations.
