It is believed that fewer fireworks were set off in the Drakenstein valley this past Guy Fawkes Day than in previous years.
According to Gerald Esau, Drakenstein Municipality’s Executive Director of Community Services they received 21% less complaints during Guy Fawkes celebrations this year compared to other years. Esau explained that five complaints were registered at the Drakenstein Smart Safety Network (DSSN) control this year while 23 complaints were registered for the same period in 2021.
“Three fines to the value of R1 500 were issued and two boxes of fireworks were confiscated.”
Furthermore no damage to equipment or private property was reported nor any injuries.
Residents to whom Paarl Post spoke to in different areas agreed that the setting off of fireworks in these areas were less prevalent this year, which was welcomed by all.
The city of Cape Town reported that they too experienced a decline in the use of illegal fireworks.
