For the past few years educators at Paarl Girls’ High have received training to enhance classroom management styles as well as improve the quality of relationships with learners.

These courses, led by Mitchell Messina of ACTSA (Association of Choice Theory – South Africa), are based on the teachings and philosophy of Dr William Glasser, a world-renowned psychiatrist, who developed concepts such as “reality therapy” and “choice theory”.

The purpose of this approach is to create an environment in which learners learn to be in control of their thoughts and actions, and acquire the skills to make positive choices.

They believe that by choosing their own core values, such as punctuality, respect, trust, honesty and participation, the learners create a framework of appropriate classroom and social behaviours.

Paarl Girls’ High was visited by the William Glasser International Board, which officially endorses choice theory and reality therapy training worldwide, in the week 4-8 February. It represented countries such as USA, Canada, Australia, Croatia, Slovenia, Japan and South Korea.
