A local school in Mbekweni, has just send their first group of girls for a free three month computer course at Cape Access in the Mbekweni Thusong Centre as part of the #Support the Girls Initiative.
Desmond Mpilo Tutu High School which forms part of #Support the Girls Initiative was the brainchild of one man, Phumzile Stofile who wanted to make a difference in the lives of the very needy girls in the two high schools of Mbekweni.
The initiative’s initial priority was to assist girls with free sanitary hampers. The project grew phenomenally and in just a short span of a month partners such as Mediclinic Paarl, Old Mutual, Department of Social Development, Mbekweni Youth Centre, The Haven Night Shelter and Cape Access came on board. From something that initially intended to provide sanitary pads to girls, it has developed into creating opportunities for girls to get free computer classes from Xhanti Mangena, Manager of Cape Access.
“There are many more opportunities awaiting for the girls as the initiative develops,” says Stofile.
