Rumours that Paarl is a Covid-19 hotspot is not true.

Fake news broke over the weekend and spread like a wildfire across social media platforms such as community WhatsApp groups, that Paarl is a Covid-19 hotspot. The Department of Health in the Cape Winelands however said that Paarl/Drakenstein is not a Covid-19 hotspot.

It has also been confirmed that Drakenstein has the highest active Covid-19 cases in the Cape Winelands district. On 30 July 1 758 active infections was recorded in Drakenstein.

  • Western Cape Premier Alan Winde received his first vaccine dose on Saturday. While encouraging people to get vaccinated Winde also asked everyone to refrain from distributing fake news and do proper research from reliable sources.

Speak to a nurse at your local clinic or hospital and ask them to explain to you how it works. There is a lot of fake news on social media and being shared via WhatsApp, and so I know it can be confusing. But please check trusted sources so you can make an informed decision with accurate information.”
