The well known Fireball Band, who celebrated their 50th birthday in 2020, will host a family-day show on Saturday 5 November at Entrée De Schoongezicht in Dal Josaphat.

The band, which was founded in 1970 by the late Jacob and Maria de Klerk from Paarl, is still going strong.

Their son Jeremy (Jermaine) de Klerk, at the age of 10, would regularly join his parents and the four other band members on stage.

Today, the 60-year old, a drummer and singer, leads the family band.

He explained what it was like being a “band child” along for the ride, particularly with a band at its climax, when it enjoyed the lion’s share of its popularity. “As a young child I would tour with my parents as far as Namibia,” Jeremy recalled.

He said consistently good performances from the band set a solid platform. “Fireball set the music scene on fire and lived up to their name. They became well known all over South Africa, in major and smaller towns and cities, including Namibia and elsewhere in Southern Africa.”

Jeremy said the band released eight albums, and many of their songs were very popular and are still played by other bands and radio stations today.

At the age of 9 his daughter Jenice started sharing the stage with her father. Today she sings one of the band’s hits “Yesterday once more”.

At the age of 5 Jenice’s daughter Chloe, who is now 19, also showed an interest in the band and is also one of its singers. Jeremy explains the Fireball fan club has grown bigger over the years.

“The band signed a contract to perform in the UAE back in 2005, and since then the group is still performing between South Africa and the Middle East.”

The band invites locals to join them on Saturday at their family-day event, where they and other artists will perform. These include Stewart Casper, Mize Roodman (Carlos Santana tribute), DJ Hilton and saxophonist Mario Arnolds.

There will also be active braai facilities and jumping castles for the kids.

Pre-sold tickets cost R100 for adults. Tickets at the gates will cost R120 per adult and R30 for kids older than 12.
