Recently an elderly man became another victim of an ATM scam at Paarl Mall.

It was reported last week that the man and his wife were confronted by four “well dressed men” at the P n P exit of the Mall, shortly after 18:00. The men told the couple that they had to pay for parking at the Mall after 18:00.

When the elderly man said that he does not have cash, the men turned him towards the BSA ATM near the exit, where he reluctantly went to draw money.

But a soon as his card was inserted into the ATM, it was swallowed and the men disappeared. The man then received a cellphone message indicating that R1 800 had just been withdrawn from his bank account.

A spokesperson for Paarl Mall, Ryan van Heerden, said that Centre Management are aware of the alleged incident in the parking area, and are working with Phangela Group, their security service providers, to investigate the matter thoroughly.

“Paarl Mall collaborates closely with law enforcement, our tenants and the local community for ongoing crime prevention. We want to assure our customers that their safety remains our top priority, and we have extensive security measures in place to support this.”

Signs have also been posted at the Mall reminding clients that parking at the Mall is free at all times.
