Learners of Desmond Tutu High School in Mbekweni and Paarl Girls’ High are in the final rounds of the National Acting Competition at Artscape.

Annually learners of Paarl and surrounds have been very successful in this competition.

From more than 500 national contestants, Litha Magqazana from Desmond Tutu and Emma van Rooyen from Girls’ High were chosen to participate at Artscape in Cape Town in the final rounds.

“What makes this year even more special, is that Emma is the grandchild of well-known playwright and lecturer, Dr Ben Dehaeck,” said drama teacher Wiwe Ras Pretorius.

Dehaeck is the theatre-maker and the founder of the Breughel theatre group in Cloetesville.

As result of his tireless work and contagious enthusiasm, he was honoured by having a bursary named after him.

At the competition, the Ben Dehaeck bursary was awarded to a first generation student to study drama at the Stellenbosch University.

Emma and Litha were very proud to be witness to this event as well.
