A local group of 14 men took part in die annual Hollard Daredevil Run last Friday (1 November). As part of the event men run in their underwear to help raise men’s awareness, particularly of prostate and testicular cancer. One participant, Jan Marais, said they ran from Optenhorst Village in Paarl to Market Street and back again. He joked and said they had received lots of support from motorists and people they passed. “One thing I can tell you is that the women who cheered us on didn’t look us in the eyes!” Marais added that this cause is very close to his heart, as his father died of prostate cancer and he had two friends who battled with the disease. “It is important for us to raise awareness because men don’t usually go to the doctor for the check-ups.” The ages of the participants ranged from 16 to 62 years old. These men hope they’ve encouraged other men to look after their health.Photo: Chantélle Hartebeest
