The picture is pretty bleak in Paarl and Wellington when looking at the state of lawlessness on our streets.

Vagrants have made every nook and cranny their home. Littering is common practice. So to public disturbance and harassment of the public, loitering, illegal hawkers and car guards, and then of course mini-bus taxis being a complete law to themselves and speedsters racing around the streets all day and night.

These are just a very few examples of Drakenstein by-laws which are broken continuously. And it will seem that there is no will to have these by-laws imposed.

For many years now, the Drakenstein Municipality has been in a ‘planning’ phase for a municipal court to be established which is supposed to tackle these problems and hopefully help our towns to get ‘cleaned-up’.

But still the court remains closed together with an array of excuses as to why it is still not operational.

Also close on 20 years ago the law-enforcement division of the municipality was established but not much has come of them actually enforcing law, except for guiding traffic at major intersections at peak hours.

The communities of Drakenstein are getting pretty fed up with the state of their towns and the complete lawlessness which prevails. And they are even more irate that the powers that be who do not do much to tackle the sorry state of our streets,
