During the late afternoon of Easter Monday, while most volunteer private fire fighters of the Drakenstein Farm Watch (DFW) Fire and Rescue group were enjoying family time around the dinner table, the emergency radio network of the DFW sprung to life. Daan van Leeuwen Boomkamp said DFW’s dedicated Fidelity ADT Officer M Farmer reported signs of smoke coming from the Keerweder area, Paarl, and went to inspect. It appeared a raging field fire between the fruit orchards started at a secluded dam of a farm. “The farmer was already busy trying to stop the flames, as two DFW 4×4 fire Engines and two DFW cruisers arrived and assisted.” The fire was quickly contained and no further damage was done to the precious fruit and crop, Daan reported. “Upon inspection, the origin of the fire was a drinking party by local residents on site who let a small set fire get out of hand. Empty beer bottles and other items completed the story.” Photo: Facebook (DFW)
