An open letter to the Director General LT Makhode and Yusuf Simons, Western Cape Provincial Manager of the Department or Home Affairs:

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention a pressing matter concerning the accessibility of identification documents for citizens, especially those in underprivileged areas and the most vulnerable individuals who lack the means to travel to their nearest Home Affairs office.

As we approach the upcoming national elections in 2024, it has become evident that many registered voters face challenges in obtaining or replacing their lost identification documents, hindering their ability to vote.

To address this issue, I propose utilising and deploying Home Affairs existing mobile solution trucks within the Cape Winelands district and surrounding areas. These Home Affairs mobile solution trucks can provide on-the-spot ID issuance services to registered voters who have lost their IDs.

This campaign aims to inspire civic participation and empower citizens by ensuring that every eligible individual (registered voter), especially those in underprivileged areas and vulnerable populations, has the opportunity to obtain an ID and participate in the democratic process.

Following your approval and acknowledgment providing us with the Home Affairs mobile offices, myself and my team plan to coordinate the days, slots, and areas with the highest need for identification services.

By deploying mobile units equipped with necessary resources we can bring identification services closer to the community, particularly during this crucial time for our people to vote. This strategic approach will alleviate the burden on citizens who may face challenges in reaching traditional Home Affairs offices, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and representative electoral process.

I kindly request the department’s support and collaboration in making this ID Campaign a reality, with a special focus on bringing resources closer to the community during this pivotal time for voting.

Your expertise and resources are crucial in addressing this challenge and ensuring that the upcoming national elections are accessible, inclusive and representative of our diverse population.

Thank you for considering this matter, and I look forward to your positive response.
