SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR FRAUD
A 41-year-old man appeared in the Paarl Magistrates’ Court on Friday (2 November) on fraud charges after he was arrested for attempting to purchase a cellphone with a fraudulent card. According to Capt Louise du Plessis, spokesperson for the Paarl police, the suspect attempted to purchase a handset and airtime to the value of approximately R3 000 in Paarl’s central business district (CBD). “The shop assistant received a notice indicating that the purchaser has exceeded the RICA limit. After they enquired it was found that the suspect was in possession of almost 400 sim cards and fraudulent cards. He has been released and is to reappear in court on 8 December,” Du Plessis said.
ROBBERY ON N1 HIGHWAY
A driver and passenger of a stationary truck that had a broken water pipe became the victims of a robbery on the N1 off ramp close to Main Road on Sunday (5 November) at approximately 12:00. “The complainants were approached by two males whilst waiting for a mechanic. One of the suspects took out a firearm and pointed it at the complainant and the other suspect threatened them with a knife,” police spokesperson, Capt Louise du Plessis said. According to Du Plessis, the suspects searched the complainants and subsequently took a wristwatch and backpack. The suspects fled on foot and the complainants managed to alert a security vehicle of the incident. One of the suspects were caught and handed over to police. He appeared in the Paarl Magistrates’ Court on Monday (6 November) and has been remanded into custody until his next appearance on 21 November.
