KC107.7, in partnership with the Services SETA, is set to host a groundbreaking conference on 6 March at Le Bac Estate in Paarl. It aims to address the persistent challenges of youth unemployment in the Cape Winelands District, bringing together industry leaders, non-profit organisations, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders to strategise and forge a way forward.

The 2022 World Bank report highlighted the growing demand for skilled labour due to technological advancements and evolving trade patterns. Despite legislative efforts and the establishment of Sector Education Authorities, South Africa faces a critical shortage of skilled workers, exacerbating the structural mismatch between labour market demand and supply. Approximately 2,8 million South African youth are currently not in employment, education or training, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive solutions.

The conference will delve into the economic landscape of the Drakenstein Municipality, the largest municipality in the Cape Winelands District. With a population of around 306 000, including 110 000 youth and 26 000 unemployed individuals, the challenges are evident. Economic drivers identified include wholesale and retail, tourism, hospitality, agriculture, finance, insurance, real estate, manufacturing, transport and logistics.

The event will propose innovative solutions within the framework of the District Development Model (DDM), involving better coordination and collaboration across national, provincial and local levels.

The conference will feature a knowledge-sharing festival, offering a platform for stakeholders to showcase opportunities and initiatives.

Spanning on-air broadcasts, outdoor festivals, and online campaigns, aims to expose youth to diverse opportunities and resources, to address unemployment, inequality, poverty and no access to information.
