The Boland Cavaliers thrashed the visiting Eastern Province Elephants 70-12 in their opening Currie Cup First Division clash in Robertson on Saturday.

The home team was far too strong for the Elephants and was leading by 35-7 at half-time already.

The Cavaliers’ forwards, with Ludio Williams (flank), Zandre Jordaan (eightman) and Marlyn Williams (lock) very prominent, won the collisions up front and ensured the backs got good-quality ball with which to cause havoc.

The two veterans Elgar Watts (flyhalf) and Jacquin Jansen (fullback) showed their experience by pinning EP back in their own half with long kicks down field when they had the wind at their backs.

If Randall Modiba (Boland coach) was ecstatic about the victory, he would also have been a worried man after Watts, Williams, Arnout Malherbe (prop) and Jordaan all left the field at some stage with injuries.

The Cavaliers travel to Potchefstroom today (Thursday) and will face the Leopards tomorrow (Friday) at 17:00 in their second Currie Cup clash.

Point scorers: Tries by Gerrit van Wyk (centre), Valentino Wellman (centre 2), Marlyn Williams, Tapiwa Tsomondo (flank 2), Zandre Jordaan (2), Charles Mayeza (wing), Clinton Theron (prop) and convertions by Jaywinn Juries (skrumhalf 5), Watts (1) en Jansen (4).

Elephants: Tries by Zingisa April (eightman) en Diego Williams (replacement-flank) and a conversion by Henrique Oliver (reserve fullback).

*Boland forwards coach Henley du Plessis has signed a three-year contract as head coach of Kenian club Kabras Sugar. Saturday’s game was his last with the Cavaliers.
