Police seized one AK 47 rifle, an Uzzi, five 9 mm pistols and an assortment of ammunition.

A 40-year-old will soon appear in court following his arrest at a self-storage facility in Cape Town on Tuesday (10 May) where cocaine with an estimated street value of R18 million and several illegal firearms was found in his possession.

According to Western Cape Police Spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk, members attached to the Anti-Gang Unit, Crime Intelligence and Provincial Organised Crime Detectives were led to a storage facility in Roeland Street, Cape Town.

“Armed with intelligence about drugs and firearms being stored at the mentioned address, the members operationalised the information and pounced on the self-storage facility where they found the suspect (male) at one of the units.

“They conducted a search of the unit upon which they discovered 15 bricks of cocaine of about 15 kilograms (1kg each) with an estimated street value of R18 million as well as one AK 47 rifle, an Uzzi, five 9 mm pistols and an assortment of ammunition,” Van Wyk said.

The 40-year-old man will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court once charged for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition and dealing in drugs.

Fifteen bricks of cocaine of about 15 kilograms (1kg each) with an estimated street value of R18 million was seized.


Provincial Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Thembekile Patekile praised the integrated effort which led to the discovery of the drugs and firearms which in the wrong hands, could cause havoc in communities where gang and gun violence are prevalent.

“The police remains resolute to eradicate drug abuse and the prevalence of firearms which poses a threat to the safety of communities in the Western Cape,” he said.
